The Radio Television Program at LBCC includes a television component and each of the three Certificates offered in R/TV can be earned with an emphasis in television.
While the college has offered a program of courses in television since the early 60's, it has only been in the last 15 years or so that much production in television has actually taken place. The college operates a cable headend for two separate cable systems and students produce material that is frequently broadcast on the two cable channels. The philosophy of the program is "hands on" training with students managing all aspects of production and equipment operation.
Internships at local production facilities and stations are available through the R/TV Work Experience Program. Students should have either some previous experience or have been enrolled in the R/TV Program for at least one semester prior to applying for an internship.
A main feature of the R/TV Program is the weekly news show (I.E. News) written, produced and hosted by students in the Broadcast News class. The students have averaged a show every week of the semester for over eight years. As a founding affiliate of the CNN News Source Award Program, students have access to satellite footage from CNN. Most stories focus on local issues and many deal with the diverse concerns of a multifaceted student body.
A new television studio was completed in 1995. Along with two edit suites, the Master Control for the three camera studio also doubles as an additional edit bay. Students produce on both three quarter and SVHS tape format. Several field units are available for students to "check out".
